Darren continues to demand transport investment.

Labour MP for Bristol North West, Darren Jones has continued to call for large-scale improvements to transport infrastructure in North Bristol following a gridlock conference on Saturday 7th July.

Darren continued to put the needs of his constituents first by bringing together a wide range of experts and community groups from his constituency.

The group discussed the gridlock hot stops across the North Bristol corridor and how they may be impacted by further developments such as the proposed expansion of Cribbs Causeway, new housing developments at Filton airfield, the potential arena at Filton alongside the lifting of Severn Bridge Tolls. Attendees then debated how a Transport Fund for North Bristol could be spent to support solutions to the congestion faced by drivers, encourage more sustainable travel and boost the area’s limited rail, bus and cycle networks.

Ahead of the Gridlock Conference that he chaired, Bristol North West MP, Darren Jones had previously launched a petition calling on the region’s metro mayor, Tim Bowles, to commit at least £50m to a new transport fund for north Bristol and voiced his concerns about congestion with members of the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Darren encouraged the LEP to back plans to invest £50 million into his North Bristol Transport Fund initiative.

Darren said:

“North Bristol is undergoing intensive development alongside a transport system and road network that is struggling to cope with current, let alone future, demands. Congestion is rife and it affects my constituents and local businesses every single day, not just in respect of travel time and parking but also our continued failure to meet air pollution targets. Transport is the number one local concern in North Bristol and anyone who uses our roads, buses and limited local rail network knows our infrastructure can’t cope with proposed development of thousands of new homes and new businesses. Walking is often not safe and cycle routes are inadequate.

With tens of thousands of new homes, plans to expand the Mall at Cribbs Causeway, the lifting of the tolls on the Severn Bridge (with no assessment of how many extra cars this will bring) and the potential for the Bristol Arena to move to North Bristol, we must get our transport solutions sorted now. My Gridlock Conference brought together representatives of transport providers, transport campaign groups, developers, community groups and business representatives who by working together can help to develop a North Bristol Transport Plan.

I had hoped this would be a cross-party initiative – for the benefit of North Bristol. I was keen to work with the Conservative Metro Mayor, Tim Bowles alongside Labour colleagues and I remain disappointed that the Metro Mayor refused to attend this meeting. For my North Bristol Transport Plan to work, we need a North Bristol Transport Fund. The LEP and the Metro Mayor have the ability to fund this, which is why I’m continuing to call on them to get involved and to deliver for my constituents and for North Bristol.”

Darren backs local shops – nominate your high street now!

Bristol North West MP, Darren Jones MP has backed local high streets and urged the government to do more to protect local jobs and the heart of our local communities.

Darren said:

” We know our high streets and shopping parades are struggling – shops are closing across the country and I see the impact of vacant stores here in Bristol North West. Almost 70,000 retail jobs, including shop-floor roles, are set to be axed this year in Britain – according to a new report released by retail magnate Bill Grimsey. His review suggests high streets are facing “their greatest challenge in history”.

Just yesterday, a resident of Westbury-on-Trym shared their concerns about a vacant premise becoming a target for petty vandalism and the number of stores now empty in the village. I’ll be meeting with a representative from Westbury Business Association next week to discuss what I can do to help champion all of our high streets.

The government must urgently re-assess the support they are giving to small, family run shops, as well as the medium and larger chains who are not immune to these pressures, and the rates they charge them – high streets are the lifeblood of our communities.

I’m also working hard to bring infrastructure investment to Bristol North West – we know congestion, and irregular or unreliable bus, rail and cycle routes can put people off visiting a high street and only encourages them to visit out-of-town retailers and shop online. Our transport network must support local high streets and encourage use of public transport.

I am also urging residents to do their bit – shop locally, support locally-run businesses and nominate their high street for the Visa Great British High Street competition“.

Darren visits Orchard School in Horfield

On Friday 29th June, as part of his mission to visit every school in Bristol North West, Darren Jones MP visited Orchard School in Horfield.

Darren said after the visit:

” I enjoyed another great school visit today at Orchard School in Horfield. I always leave schools with hope after seeing our young people with so much energy and enthusiasm about the future. And I keep trying to persuade them to take over from me in a few years time!”

Darren shares details of Stoke Park meeting

Following a recent meeting with local councillors and Friends of Stoke Park,  Darren Jones MP has updated residents on plans for a  public meeting to discuss Bristol City Council’s works at Stoke Park.

The meeting will be held at 7pm at The Hub Lockleaze, Gainsborough Square on Wednesday 4th July.

Darren said:

“This meeting offers anyone with questions/worries about the on-going project at Stoke Park to meet the council’s parks team as well as the local councillors Gill Kirk and Estella Tincknell.

I’ll be in Parliament on 4th July (as the House will be in session) but I’ve been working closely with Gill and Estella to understand concerns and ensure you have the opportunity to find out more.

I would encourage as many people to attend as possible. As well as meeting the Friends of Stoke Park, Gill and Estella, I was also delighted to be able to stop-by the Bristol Refugee Festival’s community feast being held at Buzz Lockleaze on the same date”.

Darren tours HMP Bristol and shares funding concerns

MP for Bristol North West, Darren Jones met the Governor of HMP Bristol, Steve Cross and toured the prison formerly known as HMP Horfield. HMP Bristol is in the constituency of Bristol West but prisoners from across the area are sent here to serve their sentences and many staff live in Bristol North West.

Darren said:

“ I found the visit extremely useful and would like to thank Steve, his team and some of the prisoners for meeting me. Prison services are under an incredible amount of pressure and HMP Bristol have faced, and continues to face, many high profile challenges. The facility itself is ageing and suffering from a lack of investment. Staffing numbers have been low whilst remaining staff have faced record levels of violence and the rising use of former legal highs such as Spice as well as more traditional drugs. I was therefore really pleased to hear that staff numbers have risen, investment is being made to the oldest parts of the prison, there’s a focus on education and skills training and use of drugs is declining. Given my role on the Science and Tech Committee, I was particularly keen to hear about the use of experimental technology to block the use of drones (which drop drugs) over the prison.

Whilst there has been improvements in other areas,  I was concerned to hear about the lack of support available to prisoners with acute mental health needs.  As beds in secure mental health units are in such demand prisoners often find it very difficult to access the right level of care and therefore remain in prison for lengthy periods. This is especially worrying given the 5 self-inflicted deaths at HMP Bristol during 2016 – the highest number on records since 1978.

The situation in this, and other, prisons  needs more focus from government. HMP Bristol staff are doing what they can within the resources they have –  government funding is sorely needed to improve the whole facility, provide swift access to adequate mental health support and ensure those employed as Prison Officers are paid fairly for the increasingly challenging job that they do. The government must listen to HMP staff and governors as well, as the prisoners and their families, and act on their concerns”.

Darren joins North Bristol Beat Team for Friday night ride-along

MP for Bristol North West, Darren Jones joined the North Bristol Beat Team for a ride-along on February 17th.

Darren joined the officers from Avon and Somerset Police to see their typical Friday night and discuss how funding cuts have impacted the local police force.

Darren said:

“ I found the visit extremely useful and would like to thank the beat team for taking me out. The police do a fantastic job in really difficult circumstances. The never-ending cuts to local police budgets have had an impact on the service the police can deliver on the ground and I know my constituents are concerned about crime and ASB levels – that’s why I’ve written to the minister explaining the force is at a tipping point and needs more funding. I’ll keep championing proper police funding and the scrapping of the public sector pay cap so we ensure we pay our public servants properly for the incredible work they do – and they stay in the job.”

Darren visits Foodbank

Darren Jones MP has visited the team at North Bristol Foodbank. After dropping-in to the Foodbank’s Christmas donation drive at Tesco in Horfield in December 2017, Darren wanted to meet the hard working volunteers, trustees and manager who welcome people to the service and package up the donations.

The Foodbank was set-up in 2012 and offered 3,740 emergency three-day food parcels in the last year.

Darren Jones MP said:

” I was really keen to meet the people who make the Foodbank possible, many are volunteers and they work extremely hard alongside the small number of paid staff and trustees. Childcare voucher changes and Universal Credit are likely to result in even more demand for their services. I urge anyone who can to donate and support their Foodbank.”

Darren calls for reinstatement of 76 bus to Henbury School – sign the petition now:

Darren Jones MP has called for the reinstatement of the number 76 bus to Henbury School following changes to the First Bus route in January 2018.  Darren has written to the Managing Director of First Bus, along with Bristol North West councillors Gill Kirk (Lockleaze) and Helen Godwin (Southmead). Pupils at the school come from across Bristol North West.

Darren Jones MP said:

” A number of pupils, parents and local residents have been affected by the changes to the 76 route through Henbury – bus services are a vital community resource and changes need to be fully considered before they are made. It is totally reasonable for large, urban schools to want a bus stop near-by – not having one is only likely lead to more parents dropping their kids off which creates congestion, parking issues and air pollution. I’ll be meeting with First Bus in early March to discuss these changes alongside the recent fare rises and their practise of charging varying fares based on payment method.”
