Darren condemns PM’s ‘MPs v. the People’ speech

Writing on Facebook, Darren responded to the PM’s speech in which she sought to set the public against MPs:

Not only is the Prime Minister dangerously delusional but she’s now become a right wing populist: putting parliament “in the way” of the people.

As your MP I have done nothing but try and get the best outcome for our part of the world, for our country and in line with the clear majority view of the people I represent.

At a time of enormous political tensions, created by the quite possibly the worst Prime Minister we’ve ever had, she’s added dangerous rhetoric to the populist’s arguments.

I get very little abuse or threats, although a few constituents have had visits from the police following threats made to me, but many of my colleagues are having an awful time.

This Brexit disaster is putting the very foundations of our country at risk of collapse. Regardless of our views on the best way forward we should now remember how much we value tolerance, freedom of speech, the rule of law and our democratic system.

The Prime Minister has become an authoritarian hostage to the preservation of her own deluded righteousness. But we don’t live in a dictatorship. We live in a country with collective Cabinet decision making and proper accountability by Parliament.

The Prime Minister has lost the plot. The Cabinet must force her hand or force her out. Parliament must take the reigns. And the British people must have the final say.
