Labour MP wants assurance on 30hrs Childcare Policy in Bristol

With the new government-funded 30 hours a week childcare scheme having gone live on 1st September, Darren Jones MP has written to Government asking for clarity on the policy’s implementation in his constituency.

Over the last month, constituents have been completing an online childcare survey, ran by Darren Jones, and providing more general feedback on their views and experiences of the scheme. After considering the feedback and the concerns being raised nationally in media, the Bristol North West MP has written to HMRC with a series of questions on the policy.

Darren’s letter to HMRC

Commenting, Darren said:

“Parents are expressing their concerns about problems with the website and their ability to book a childcare place once they have overcome the obstacles in gaining access to the system. I have written to HMRC, who administer this new policy, to shine further light on the problems parents and guardians are having and to get clarity of the situation locally in Bristol North West”.

Darren continued “Whilst I am hugely supportive of the extended free childcare provision, I am very concerned that parents may be unable to access the funding because the IT systems are not up to scratch. I want assurances that parents will not miss out because of websites crashing and problems receiving the authorisation codes needed to book a space. I also want to understand how many parents in Bristol North West have been unable to use their 30hours because of limited places available in local childcare settings”.

The childcare survey, which is still live, can be completed online until 14 September: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/QPXTL7S.
