Darren demands zero net emissions target in letter to Prime Minister
2nd May 2019:
Alongside cross-party MPs and over 50 Lords, Darren has written to the Prime Minister calling on the Government to adopt a zero net emissions target before 2050.
Darren said:
“Alongside supporting yesterday’s (1st May 2019) historic Labour-led motion calling on the government to declare a Climate Change Emergency, I have signed a cross-party letter calling on the Prime Minister to adopt a net zero emissions target before 2050.
This morning, the Committee on Climate Change have given historic advice to the UK Government to reach a net zero emissions target by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target.
We must adopt this advice and set a legally binding target for a future where the UK no longer contribute to climate change. Britain has a chance to be a world leader in cutting our emissions, to protect the people, places, and life we love.
Net zero emissions is already supported by the majority of the British public, as well as businesses, farmers, scientists. We know that reaching net zero emissions by at least 2045 is possible, so now is the time to act. We have all the solutions and tech needed to tackle climate change are at our fingertips. We must shift our country’s role in the fight against climate change, from adding to it to halting it. We must be a world leader and work with other counties to follow suit.
As a signatory to this cross party letter in support of a net zero target, I am proud to welcome the Committee on Climate Change’s historic advice”.
