Upcoming events.
Climate Crisis Town Hall
As we head into 2025, join me at a venue in Henleaze for a forward-looking discussion about the climate crisis.
As always, the audience can ask me anything. But here are some potential talking points, as a starter for ten:
How can we mitigate the impacts of our winters getting warmer and wetter?
What are the next steps for the UK to transition to clean energy?
How do we take recycling rates, which have stagnated in Bristol, in the right direction this year?
Plus, I'm pleased to announce that Dr Alix Dietzel, a climate justice and climate policy expert at the University of Bristol, will be unpacking the outcomes of COP29.
Important:
This event is only for people who live in my Bristol North West constituency. If you are not a constituent, your ticket will be cancelled. (You can check if your address is in my constituency here: https://members.parliament.uk/FindYourMP)
For security reasons, the venue details will only be shared with attendees 24 hours before the event. The venue will be in Henleaze.
The venue is wheelchair accessible.
Christmas Coffee Morning with Darren Jones MP
I warmly invite my constituents in Bristol North West to join me for my annual Christmas Coffee Morning. This event will be held in Henbury.
I know they say you shouldn't talk about politics at Christmas, but how about a friendly chat with your MP over a cup of tea or coffee and a tasty mince pie? I'll be happy to discuss any local or national issues that are important to you.

Assisted Dying Town Hall
MPs will vote in the House of Commons on 29th November on whether to legalise assisted death.
The full text of the proposed new law, referred to as a ‘bill’, was published on 11th November. Its long title states it will “allow adults who are terminally ill, subject to safeguards and protections, to request and be provided with assistance to end their own life”.
This will be a free vote, meaning that MPs will not be told by Party whips whether to support or oppose the bill. The Prime Minister has also suspended collective Cabinet responsibility on any votes associated with the Bill, to allow Ministers to vote per their conscience.
My view is that a Private Members' Bill is not the right way to try to introduce a change in law on such a complex issue. This is because Private Members' Bills, which are introduced by backbench MPs, don't get anywhere near the same level of scrutiny and debate as the bills put forward by the Government. As someone who has passed a Private Members' Bill in the last Parliament, I am aware that they are normally only used for small changes in law – and legalising assisted death does not fall under that category. I therefore plan to either abstain or vote against the Bill on these grounds.
Putting my voting intention to one side, I want to give constituents the opportunity to hear both sides of the debate and to put their views to me directly. If you live in Bristol North West, you are warmly invited to come to this town hall event on assisted dying. All views will be listened to respectfully.
To help inform the discussion, I have invited guest speakers with opposing views on assisted dying:
Pauline Carroll, a retired district nurse and lead campaigner for the Bristol and Bath branch of the Dignity in Dying campaign group, which supports the Bill.
Professor Julian Hughes, an Honorary Professor at Bristol Medical School who specialises in philosophy and ethics in relation to ageing and dementia and a supporter of the Care Not Killing campaign, which opposes the Bill.
The panellists will make brief opening statements, and then the discussion will be opened up for questions or comments from the audience.

Film screening: Village Matters
The event is free, but tickets must be booked in advance using the link below.
See Bristol North West's villages celebrated on the big screen in a screening of 'Village Matters', created by Darren Jones MP as part of his It takes a village campaign.
In this collection of seven short films, Darren talks to experts from Historic England and a local historian about the historical context of issues that are important to constituents today.
Please note, Darren Jones MP will not be present at the screening.
The seven films will be played back-to-back, each focussing on a different theme:
Travel through a 'secret' listed tunnel in Henbury and explore the vast network of public footpaths connecting the villages of Bristol North West.
Learn how Gloucester Road benefitted from a Bristol-based innovation that was the biggest advance in road construction since the Roman times.
Discover why high streets offer a window into our local history, and what Historic England learned in its project about Shire High Street.
Delve into how the River Trym has been enjoyed and protected by local villagers since the Bronze Age – and how Southmead might be the oldest village in Bristol!
Hear about Sea Mills' proud history in being home to some of the first council houses in the country, with houses built for soldiers returning from war – and how social housing may have prevented a revolution.
Uncover the fascinating story of how repurposing a shelter for WWII soldiers manning anti-aircraft guns in Purdown gave Lockleaze its first community centre.
See how the beautiful architecture of Grace House in Westbury Park was designed to mirror the school's educational philosophy that expressive movement is therapeutic, and explore the rich history of SEND education in Bristol North West.
